FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is "life science"?

Life science has two sides: on the one hand it is a field of research dealing with the scientific understanding of living organisms, including humans; on the other hand it is a vital segment of the economy of the United States and indeed the entire world. These two dimensions are interconnected in that scientific research leads to innovations that benefit society as new products and services, often delivered via commercial enterprise.

Is life science the same as biotechnology?

In large part yes - though biotechnology is often used more narrowly to refer to technologies that specifically involve genetic manipulation. Life science is a much broader category - on the science side it involves all that we might traditionally have called biology and chemistry, as well as other disciplines such as engineering and physics in so far as they deal with living systems. On the business side, life sciences encompasses a wide array of major industries such as energy, food, agriculture, natural resources, and medicine (human and veterinary).

Why the focus on technology-driven economic development?
